As an employer, you must understand your responsibilities on public holidays in Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we will provide a useful overview of Hungarian public holiday dates, your obligations as an employer, and payment requirements for holiday pay in Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When are Hungary\u2019s Public Holidays?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Below is a list of public holidays in Hungary in 2026:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1 January \u2013 New Year\u2019s Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 January &#8211; Rest Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15 March \u2013 Anniversary of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution\u2019s outbreak<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 April &#8211; Good Friday<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 April &#8211; Easter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 April &#8211; Easter Monday<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 May \u2013 Labour Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>24 May \u2013 Pentecost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25 May &#8211; Pentecost Monday<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20 August &#8211; State Foundation Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>21 August &#8211; Rest Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>23 October &#8211; National Day in memory of the 1956 revolution (Republic Day)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 November &#8211; All Saints\u2019 Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>24 December \u2013 Christmas Eve<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25 and 26 December \u2013 Christmas days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If a non-working public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the day in between the holiday and the weekend is also a free day in Hungary. This allows workers to enjoy an extended weekend. When this happens, the Saturday before or after usually becomes a business day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In 2026, this rule applies to the following holidays:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New Year\u2019s Day<\/strong> falls on Thursday 1 January, so Friday 2 January is a day off. The working day is moved to 10 January.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>State Doundation Day<\/strong> falls on Thursday 20 August, so Friday 21 August is a day off. The working day is moved to 8 August.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Christmas Day <\/strong>falls on Saturday and Sunday on 25 &amp; 26 December, so Thursday 24 December will be a day off. The working day is moved to 12 December. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do Employers Need to Know About Free Days in Hungary?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses must abide by certain rules surrounding free days in Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important points are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Employees can sometimes be <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.law\/en\/int\/expert-guides\/cms-expert-guide-to-labour-law-in-central-eastern-europe\/hungary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">required to work normal hours on public holidays in Hungary<\/a>. This is allowed when operating on national holidays is necessary due to the nature of the business. For example, employees working in accordance with a non-stop work order, or those undertaking seasonal duties may be required to work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employees who work on a public holiday in Hungary are entitled to at least <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.law\/en\/int\/expert-guides\/cms-expert-guide-to-labour-law-in-central-eastern-europe\/hungary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">double their basic rate of pay<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Overtime be Required on Public Holidays in Hungary?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.law\/en\/int\/expert-guides\/cms-expert-guide-to-labour-law-in-central-eastern-europe\/hungary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Overtime work can only be required<\/a> from employees who can work on the public holiday during normal working hours.
