Citizens of the United Kingdom after Brexit

UK citizens and their family members who have acquired the right of residence in the Republic of Lithuania before 31 December 2020 have the same rights as EU citizens. Documents issued to UK citizens and their family members certifying the right of residence in the Republic of Lithuania remain valid until their expiry. However, such documents do not allow exercising the right of free movement of persons in the Schengen area. Thus, after 31 December 2020 to be able to move freely in Schengen area UK citizens need to apply for a temporary residence permit.

UK citizens and their family members who have acquired the right of residence in the Republic of Lithuania before 31 December 2020 have simplified application process for issuing of the temporary residence permit. The persons have just to identify their personal data, living place, travel document data and the legal ground (employment contract, self-employed person or other) for a legal stay in Lithuania. In order to receive the temporal residence permit, it is necessary to fill up the application via MIGRIS system and book time in Migration Department. The temporary residence permit is issued for free for 5 years period.

However, UK citizens who have not acquired the right of residence in the Republic of Lithuania before 31 December 2020 and intend to live in the Republic of Lithuania after 31 December 2020 have to submit more data and documents proving their legal ground to live in Lithuania when applying for the temporary residence permit. After the Brexit UK citizens have the same legal ground for the temporal residence permit as a citizen of Australia, Japan, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand and South Korea, i.e. employment under the employment contract or the member or the manager of a private legal entity that is engaged in the Republic of Lithuania in an activity registered in the documents of incorporation, and the purpose of their arrival to the Republic of Lithuania is working in the company, or self-employed and working under the individual activity. The temporary residence permit can be issued up to 3 years period.

It is important to mention, that any work permit is not required for UK citizens.
