The population structure of Finland is getting older and the life expectancy is increasing. Due to these reasons, the maintenance ratio is getting weaker, as there are more people outside of working life than there are people at working age. For this reason, the reform attempts to secure the financial stability of the pension system, and also ensure adequate pension security and equality between generations. If career lengths are not raised from their current state; future pensions get smaller, the amount of people in working life is reduced even further and the employee pension payments would have to be raised.
